Doesn't give the best impression of Chinese people. Maybe some were too embarrassed to come?
It takes place in China. There's a little boy, Ping, who is a really good gardener, and the emperor has to choose an heir? I guess he doesn't have any kids? So the emperor gives all the children seeds and tells them whoever gives him the best flower in a year will be emperor. So Ping tries his darnedest to grow a flower from the seed, but nothing comes up. So he brings an empty pot to the emperor after a year when everybody else is bringing flowers. The emperor is like, "I don't know where the rest of you got your flowers, but the seeds I gave you were cooked so they wouldn't grow." And Ping is the only one who brought an empty pot, so he's the only honest child in the entirety of China, so he's going to be the emperor.
